How Much Does a Makeup Application Cost: Exploring Makeup Prices in Perth

We’ve all been there — you’ve got a wedding, birthday or fun night out with the girls coming up and you’d like someone else to work their magic with the makeup brushes. Then comes the obvious question: how much does a professional makeup artist actually cost in Perth?
The slightly annoying answer is… it depends! Makeup prices in Perth can vary a lot, and while it’s tempting to compare artists purely by the number at the bottom of the quote, there’s usually much more behind that price than meets the eye.
So, before you automatically book the cheapest — or assume the most expensive must be the best — here’s what you’re actually paying for and what you can expect when comparing professional makeup prices in Perth.
How Much Does a Makeup Artist Cost in Perth?
For an experienced professional makeup artist in Perth, you can generally expect prices to start from around $120–$150, with some highly experienced or in-demand artists charging up to $200 or more. Of course, there will always be artists offering prices lower than this. Some may be newer to the industry and charging less while they build their experience, kit and clientele. There's nothing wrong with this — just be aware of what you're paying for.
And here’s where it gets really tricky. A $120 makeup artist and a $200 makeup artist are both technically offering the same thing — a makeup application. That doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the same service.
One artist might have only a year's experience, need an hour and a quarter for a face, use budget cosmetics and still be building their reputation and clientele. Another may have spent 15 years working on hundreds of different faces, use top-shelf cosmetics and be able to complete a full face (with lashes!) in 40 minutes flat. Experience counts for a lot in this industry, and that's often the difference between a good and a bad investment.
What Are You Actually Paying For?
It's easy to look at a makeup appointment and think, '$150 for a 1 hour makeup application?! That I am going to wash off at the end of the night!'. But you're not really paying for an hour. You're paying for the years the artist spent learning how to do it in an hour, the quality of cosmetics being used and the convenience of having an artist come to you.
A professional makeup artist has usually invested thousands of dollars into training, products, brushes, equipment and keeping their kit stocked with enough high-end shades and formulas to work across different skin tones, types and ages.
Then there’s the less glamorous stuff: cleaning and sanitising that kit, travelling to appointments, parking, setting up, packing down and replacing products that seem to run out at precisely the wrong time.
And, of course, experience. A great artist should be able to look at your face, listen to what you want and work out how to make the two come together — without simply recreating the exact same makeup on every person who sits in their chair. It's about bringing out the best in your own personal features — something that needs differing techniques for every single person.
Does Paying More Mean I'll Get Better Makeup?
Nope. We'd love to tell you there was a neat little formula where the most expensive artist was automatically the best, but makeup doesn't work like that. We've come across fledgling artists fresh out of beauty school charging a starting rate of $150 a face, while we also know 20-year industry veterans still charging only $120 per person. So pricing really does vary wildly, and a higher price doesn't necessarily equal more experience. You need a keen eye to distinguish who is the better choice.
This is why we'd always look at the work before the price.
If you love soft, natural makeup and someone's portfolio is wall-to-wall Insta glam, cut creases and heavy contour, it probably doesn't matter how many awards they've won — they're unlikely to be your perfect match. Likewise, don't judge an artist by one spectacular photo. Scroll. Look at different faces. Different ages. Different skin types.
Don't just ask yourself whether the makeup looks pretty. Look at the technique. Does the work look consistently good? Is the foundation colour matching correct? Is the eyeliner neat and crisp, or a wonky line that lacks confidence? Do the eyes appear lifted and open, or droopy with heavy lashes that were applied incorrectly? That's much more revealing.

And Please Read the Reviews!
We cannot stress this one enough. Beautiful makeup is important. Actually turning up to do it on time is fairly important too.
When you're reading reviews, don't just look for “I loved my makeup!” Look for the boring-but-very-important stuff:
Did they arrive on time? Were they easy to communicate with? Were they calm and professional? Did the makeup last? Would the client book them again?
Reliability, good communication and a friendly personality are worth their weight in gold.
Can I Get Cheap Makeup in Perth?
Of course. You'll almost always find somebody willing to do it for less. And cheaper certainly doesn't automatically mean bad.
Newer artists often charge less while they're building their experience and portfolio, and there are some incredibly talented people at lower price points.
The question is really how much risk you're comfortable with for that particular occasion.
If it's a night out and you're happy to experiment, fantastic. If it's your wedding, a major event or something being professionally photographed, you may place more value on knowing your artist has done this hundreds of times before.
Saving $30 isn't much of a saving if you hate the result and have to pay somebody else to redo it.
Does Mobile Makeup Cost More in Perth?
Some of the time — but not always. One of the lovely things about booking a mobile makeup artist is that you don't have to go anywhere.
No driving across Perth, no hunting for parking, no walking back to your car in 38-degree heat while desperately trying not to sweat through your foundation. Your artist comes to your home, hotel or venue with everything they need.
Depending on where you're located, there may be travel or parking charges, and very early appointments can attract an additional fee. Just make sure you ask what's included when you get your quote so there are no surprises later.
What About Wedding Makeup Prices?
Weddings are a slightly different beast. You might have a bride, four bridesmaids, two mums and a flower girl all needing different combinations of hair and makeup — and everybody has to be finished by a specific time. Suddenly it's less about one makeup application and more about coordinating an entire morning.
Wedding pricing can therefore depend on your bridal party size, getting-ready location, start time, whether you need multiple artists, trials, travel and the services everyone is having.
If that's what you're researching, skip the generic figures and head to our guide to wedding hair and makeup costs in Perth. We've broken down the numbers in much more detail there.

So, How Do You Choose?
Start with the work. Find artists whose makeup actually makes you think, yes, THAT.
Then check their reviews, experience and availability. Once you've narrowed it down to people you'd genuinely trust with your face, compare their pricing and what's included. Choosing solely by price is a bit like choosing a hairdresser based on who has the cheapest scissors.
Price matters. But so does who's holding the brush.
Jacqueline Parker Creative has been working in the hair and makeup industry since 2006, and after hundreds of happy clients and reviews, we've learned that people rarely remember whether they saved $20 on their makeup appointment. They remember the confidence and the compliments they received. They remember how AMAZING they felt.
