Mascara is one of those products I'm constantly testing. Some become everyday favourites that I repurchase again and again, while others end up forgotten in the back of a drawer after a week.
Finding a budget-friendly option that delivers length, volume, separation, and decent staying power without turning your lashes into crunchy spider legs can be difficult.
So how does Maybelline's Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara stack up?
The short version? For a RRP $24.99 mascara, I actually quite liked it. Read on for my review of Maybelline's Lash Sensational Waterproof mascara👇🏻

What Does Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara Claim?
Maybelline says this mascara delivers "fanned out length & volume" and a "separated 180-degree fan effect." The good news is that some of those claims are absolutely justified. Let's explore a little deeper.
The Wand: A Love-Hate Relationship
Let's start with the brush because this is where my biggest criticism lies.
The wand is a curved design, which isn't unusual. Maybelline claims it has 10 layers of bristles. However, it's made from a surprisingly hard plastic material, meaning it's quite rigid compared to many other mascaras I've used over the years.
In fact, the best way I can describe it is this:
Using this wand sometimes feels a bit like brushing your teeth with the handle of your toothbrush instead of the bristles.
It's not soft, flexible, or cushiony. The stiffness took some getting used to, and initially I found it a little awkward to manoeuvre the product. At times it feels a little large, and there's no easy way to get the product into the tighter areas without making a mess.
That said, once I became familiar with the brush and how the formula behaves, application became much easier.
Application: Two Modes and Not Much In Between
If I had to describe this mascara's application style, I'd say it has two settings:
Barely any product.
Far too much product.
There doesn't seem to be much middle ground.
Straight out of the tube, I often found there was too much product loaded onto the brush. If applied directly, it could quickly overload the lashes and create clumps.
My solution was simple: wipe some excess product off the wand before applying.
From there, I found the best technique was to build the mascara gradually using multiple light applications rather than trying to achieve maximum impact in one coat.
I use a combination of:
Traditional strokes from lash roots to lash tips.
A gentle side-to-side wiggle at the lash line, followed by pulling the brush outward towards the lash ends.
This helps distribute the product evenly and creates a much cleaner result.
I also let each coat dry ever so slightly in between, but not too much! Going from one eye to the other seems to give the perfect amount of setting time in between coats.
Length and Separation: Where This Mascara Really Shines
If you're looking for beautifully separated lashes, this mascara performs extremely well.
One of the things I dislike most in a mascara is when multiple lashes stick together and form chunky spikes. Lash Sensational does an excellent job of avoiding that problem on the whole.
The separation is genuinely impressive.
It also delivers noticeable improvement on lengthening. My lashes looked longer, more defined, and more lifted after application.
What About Volume?
This is where I'm a little less enthusiastic.
Does it add volume?
Yes.
Does it add as much volume as some other mascaras I've tried?
Not quite.
I found it leaned more heavily towards separation than dramatic volume. That's not necessarily a bad thing—it really depends on the look you're after.
The good news is that the formula is buildable. You can continue layering coats if you want a fuller effect, provided you're patient and don't overload the lashes.
Staying Power
As far as waterproof mascaras go, I'd rate the staying power as pretty good.
Not perfect, but definitely above average.
Most days it stays put remarkably well, even through long hours.
However, towards the end of the day I occasionally noticed a slight black "halo" effect around my upper and lower lids. Nothing dramatic, but enough that I might quickly wipe underneath my eyes and on my upper lids to freshen things up.
For many people, this level of wear would still be considered very good.
The Ultimate Waterproof Test: Four Hours of Solid Crying
Now for the real-world waterproof test nobody wants to volunteer for.
I recently went through a relationship breakup (don't worry—I'm absolutely fine now) and spent a good half a day in tears whilst wearing this mascara. Sometimes life throws us curveballs, and there's no shame in having a really good cry!
Unfortunately for the mascara, this became an accidental stress test.
We're not talking about a few emotional tears.
We're talking half a box of tissues, constant eye dabbing, and enough crying to make even the toughest waterproof formula question its life choices.
The result?
The mascara pretty much gave up.
By the end, there was plenty of product transferred onto my lower eye area and cheeks, and virtually no mascara left on my lashes.
Would I hold that against it?
Honestly, no.
I can't think of many mascaras that would survive four hours of nonstop crying combined with constant tissue contact.
For normal wear, light tears, weddings, emotional movies, or happy life moments, it performs fine. If you gently dab your eyes rather than rub them, you'll likely be okay.
Removal
One thing worth mentioning is that this mascara definitely takes a bit of work to remove. Personally, I see this as a positive sign, but some reviews report eyelash loss as an issue. So far this hasn't affected myself.
Products that can be removed instantly often don't stay put during the day.
So make sure you have an eye makeup remover that's up to the task!
Final Verdict: My Review of Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara
Overall, I think Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara is one of the better affordable waterproof mascaras I've used recently.
The wand isn't my favourite, and the formula can be a little finicky until you learn how to work with it. However, once you've adjusted to both, the results are genuinely impressive.
The standout strengths are:
Excellent lash separation.
Noticeable lengthening.
Beautiful fanned-out effect.
Good staying power.
Rich Intense colour
For me, it's a significant improvement over Maybelline's The Colossal Waterproof Mascara, which I've reviewed separately and didn't enjoy nearly as much.
If you're after defined lashes with increased length and minimal clumping, at a price point most can afford, this mascara is definitely worth considering.
